Samsung reuses discarded fishing nets on new Galaxy devices starting with the Galaxy S22 series

With the project “Galaxy for the Planet“combining sustainability and innovation, Samsung Electronics has announced that Galaxy will use a new material in several of its Galaxy devices capable of giving new life to waste plastic from the ocean. So the South Korean company aims to minimize its environmental footprint and help promote more sustainable lifestyles for the Galaxy community.

Now and in the future, Samsung intends to incorporate recycled plastics sourced from the ocean across its entire product range. starting with the new Galaxy devices that will be revealed on February 9th at the event Galaxy Unpacked February 2022then from the series Galaxy S22. These devices will reflect the company’s commitment to eliminate single-use plastics and expand the use of other environmentally friendly materials, such as post-consumer recycled material (PCM) and recycled paper.

“With this transformation, the future of Galaxy technology will bring cutting-edge product design and better environmental impact.” the company explained.

There aren’t just bottles of water or plastic grocery bags drifting on the ocean’s surface. Here you can find abandoned plastic waste of various sizes (micro-plastic, medium-plastic and macro-plastic), located within 50km from the coasts in regions or areas where waste management is non-existent or inefficient. According to reports from Samsung, over 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned and discarded every year. Remaining in the oceans for centuries, these “ghost nets” are responsible for trapping and entangling marine life, damaging coral reefs and natural habitats, and even ending up in our food and water sources. These waste fishing nets are changing the delicate balance of the environment we live in, even if we don’t notice it. The South Korean company then thought about how it can collect and reuse these nets, which are just the first steps “keep the oceans clean and preserve the planet we live on and our collective future”.

“By giving new life to discarded fishing nets that would otherwise become hazardous waste, Samsung, through its creative solution, exemplifies how we can all do more with less to conserve our planet’s resources.” comments the company. “Samsung is committed to addressing ocean plastic pollution in a way that will positively impact not only the environment but also the lives of all Galaxy users. This new technological advance marks a remarkable achievement in the company’s journey to provide tangible environmental actions and protect the planet for generations to come “.

Reusing ocean plastic is just the first step in Samsung Electronics’ collective mission to tackle the climate crisis. An insight into Samsung’s vision for a sustainable future will be made during the event Galaxy Unpacked from February 9, which can be seen here.
