Google Assistant turns 5

On October 13, 2021, theGoogle Assistant has completed its first five years of life.

Five years ago asking a digital assistant to ‘turn on the light’ or ‘change the channel on the television’ was not very popular, while today digital assistants are part of the daily life of millions of people around the world – be it the Assistant Google or Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri. They help find answers to tons of questions, send messages, set reminders and alarms as well as manage smart home devices simply by using your voice.

On its debut, the Google Assistant was only available in two voices, on Google Home speakers in the US, and it supported English and German on Pixel phones. Google with Assistant believed to be not one but ten steps ahead of the competition thanks to machine learning and artificial intelligence, specifically areas such as natural language understanding, speech recognition and translation. Today, the Google Assistant is available in over 90 countries in nearly 30 languages, offers 10 voices to choose from, and works with over 100 million smart home devices, including lights, security systems and thermostats. With the help of machine learning, Google Assistant has improved over the past five years, and will still improve in the years to come.

Those who use the Google Assistant can say “Hey Google, happy birthday” or “Hey Google, how old are you?” to receive a surprise. To celebrate the first five years of its Assistant, Google has also created the video celebration that can be seen below.
